How K-pop May Affect Teenagers Positively

NCT

I often hear some parents worry much about their children being K-pop fans, and my parents are no exception. I can understand why this happened as it is quite addictive for teenagers and a part of the entertainment business. Still, we have to see that there are some benefits to it. I’m not claiming these effects are only from being K-pop fans. Anything that can make us happy may generate these effects. Since so many teenagers are crazy about K-pop, I want to tell you how I feel about it.

They give us such self-reward

K-pop idol’s main job is presenting music on the stage, but they also spread positive messages when they are off-stage. It can be beneficial for our mental health. I’m an NCTzen, I’m currently thankful for the presence of LYSN. It is a social media released by SM Entertainment as a place for SM artists to communicate with their fans in a chat setting. Other agencies may also produce the same kind of application. After a tiring day, it is so peaceful to see them encouraging us to appreciate what we have done on that day. I rarely do this before being a K-poper, maybe that was somewhat my fault, but I’m glad finally I have a chance to feel this self-love.

Safe humor for teenagers

I like watching their variety shows because their humor is creative and very dedicated. They act cute and so adorable that I almost think some of their contents are safe for children. I watch NCT variety shows mostly, but I’m sure other groups are also producing this kind of content. I hear some critics that those shows are fake. It can be a half-truth, but isn’t everything on the screen planned? I thought, as long as it is good, why not? They want to show us themselves on the screen, not their private life, so let’s just take it as how it should be taken. They are also humans who can make mistakes.

Work hard, play hard

As there are so many agendas to follow, I manage my time to finish my work early. Not in a rush, but in enough amount to get rid of laziness. Idols know that there are teenagers who like them addictively until it disrupts their school life. K-pop idols don’t want it. They don’t like it. They tell us to put them on a lower list of a priority than family and academics. They tell us not to buy their album if it is too expensive and remind us not to watch their content if we have an exam tomorrow. Sometimes, seeing them working hard makes us work hard–even studying can be considered a fangirling act!

They want to bring us happiness

Here is their motivation to be an idol: spread love, happiness, and be a reliable model. Sometimes, to achieve this goal, it costs their own life. It is so sad when we hear news about a K-pop idol’s suicide. It must be hard to please people all the time. I hope K-pop companies can take concern and provide a limit. But we have to see the whole thing. Not all K-pop idols are under pressure. The artists themselves also want to be a better person as they do their job. If they can get better life quality because of their fans, it is a mutualism symbiosis, right?

Don’t worry, they play their role as an idol, not as a boyfriend

It is common to hear my family members worry that I can’t have a real boyfriend because I like an idol. Well, I need to emphasize that I admire them as entertainers because that is how they treat us too. They are aware that they will have their own happiness when the time comes, and so will the fans.

Of course, anything excess is not good. Exposing K-pop to children at a very early age is also not the right choice. They are designed for teenagers with parents’ guidance. It’s not about judging them right away but keeping them in a healthy grow-up process. For parents, it’s not the end of the world if you find your children are K-popers. Please be optimistic that it can be turned into something positive. All we need is guidance and experience!
